How to change clothes in a video with AI

Guide · Updated 21 October 2026 · 6 min read

Changing an outfit in a photo is easy now; in a video it is harder. How AI clothes change works on video, which photo of the outfit to use, and where it falls short.

Most “AI clothes change” tools work on a single photo: upload a picture, pick an outfit, get a new picture. Doing the same in a video is a different problem, because the clothes have to stay the same shape and colour across hundreds of frames while the person moves.

How outfit change works on video

Video outfit change comes from the same models that do whole-person swaps. The model reads the motion from the clip and redraws the person from your reference photos. If one of those photos is an outfit, the person is drawn wearing it. That means you usually get your face and the new outfit together; if you only want the clothes changed, use a face photo of the person already in the clip.

Which photo of the outfit to use

Outfit transitions and several changes

Outfit transition clips (a jump, a spin or a hand over the camera, then a new look) are one of the most-copied TikTok formats. On vtrends you can add up to three outfit photos. The first is used for the first look, and the next at each outfit change in the clip. If the clip has two looks and you add one outfit, the model decides what to do with the second look, usually keeping the original.

Good clips to start with: outfit transition, fit check and date night outfit.

Where it falls short

WorksStruggles
Solid colours, simple cutsSmall repeating prints and logos
Fitted clothesLong flowing skirts and capes in fast moves
Everyday outfits and costumesExact text on clothing
One clear look per photoLayers that open and close (jackets, kimonos)

It is also not a fitting room. The model shows the style of an outfit on you, not how a particular size fits. For shopping it is a quick way to rule things out; see the Halloween version for costumes.

Questions

Can AI change clothes in a video for free?

Free clothes-change tools are almost all photo-only. Video outfit change needs a whole-person video model, which costs money to run; vtrends is $9 per video with a small watermark.

Can I keep the original person and only change the outfit?

With vtrends you also provide a face photo. Use a photo of the person in the clip (with their permission) and the outfit changes while the person stays the same.

How many outfits can I use?

Up to three on vtrends, used in order at each outfit change in the clip.
